Week Beginning 20th June 2022
Blue Marine Foundation

Navigators have been having fun continuing their learning about global warming this week by having a Live Lesson hosted by the Blue Marine Foundation. Following on from the lesson, the received makerzines- a cross between a magazine and make-it kit all about the importance of the ocean and what they can do to help the wildlife that lives within it. Further activities to do at home can be found here: BLUE Digital Education – Blue Marine FoundationBlue Marine Foundation

Beach Clean:

Last week, Navigators Class took their learning to the beach when, as part of their topic on Global Warming, they saw for themselves the effect of water pollution. Armed with gloves and bags, kindly donated by the charity Surfers Against Sewerage, the team set to work looking to clean the beach and study ocean pollution. Fantastically, not a lot of man-made rubbish was found! However, the children did manage to fill a whole jar of nurdles.

Nurdles are tiny pellets of plastic which serves as raw material in the manufacture of plastic products. We should not see them on our beaches, but unfortunately they spill during transit and are very harmful to our wildlife. They are toxic and look much like fish eggs, so are often ingested by all manner of animals. Luckily their bright colours made them easy for us to spot. We learnt that although our ocean are not throwing up much waste, these nurdles are affecting the beaches. Many thanks to a wonderful army who turned up to help us.

Week Beginning 12th June 2022
Sailing

Last Thursday, Navigators Class had a fantastic time  learning how to sail their own boats. with subsidy from the ‘Sail for a Fiver’ scheme, the children were given first hand access to a range of boats which they learnt about and sailed independently. It was an amazing day and we were so proud of how the children supported each other to feel confident and comfortable enough to have a go.

Week Beginning 6th June 2022
Maths Challenge

Before half term, a group of Year Five and Six pupils got the chance to go to Woodroffe for a fun Maths afternoon. Primary schools from around the area were invited to compete against each other in a series of challenging and fun problem solving activities. Our dedicated pupils worked brilliantly as teams, communicating and helping each other to solve some quite tricky problems! Their hard work and diligence paid off as overall Charmouth came first and third. They were a real credit to our school.

SEND Coffee Morning

Our next SEND coffee morning will be on Thursday 30th June from 9am. Elizabeth Monaghan, specialist teacher, will be supporting a focus on spelling strategies for children with SEND. Please confirm your attendance with the office via email or phone so we can ensure appropriate space and refreshments. All parents are welcome.

School Production: A Big Green Adventure

Our school production will take place on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th July. Children in year 6 will lead the production with children from across key stage 2 (Adventurers and Navigators) supporting with the singing. More information will follow in order for families to be able to buy tickets. If you are able to help in any way, eg supporting rehearsals, prop making or set painting, please do let us know!

Charmouth Scout Group is embarking on a major adult recruitment drive. We need to do this to support all four sections because:

  • Our Beaver Leader will be standing sown in July and sadly the Colony will close if we cannot find a replacement
  • We need an extra adult each week to attend Cub meetings so we can continue to split the Pack into smaller groups and achieve more on a Thursday evening
  • One of our Scout leaders will be leaving the Scout Troop shortly as she is moving away from the area and another leader works a shift pattern which means she is not available every week.
  • Our Assisatant Explorer leader is also moving away from the area – he is married to the Scout leader. More help is therefore needed in the Explorer
  • Finally, we cannot take anyone off our 20-strong Waiting List without more adult help

Can you help us or do you know anybody who may be able to help? We are sure there are some great new adult helpers, programme planners and activity researchers out there.

We are running a ‘Volunteering is Good for You’ evening at the Scout Hut in Barrs Lane on Tuesday, March 29th 7-8pm which anyone who wants to know more about helping at meetings or just planning activities behind the scenes can attend. Or call Melanie on 07890 540979.

Thank you,

Explorers: What a fantastic start to the week with beach school, the children had a great time.  We spent most of the time looking for treasure when we then brought back to the school which we then spent time examining with magnifying glass.  Maths this week has been focused on measure, we have been looking at height and length of different objects around the class.  We also had fun estimating how many bricks it would take to measure the children compared to Mr Mitchel.  Phonics we have continued to consolidate our Set 1 sounds.  In writing we thought about what we would put in our picnic basket and labeled the contents.  This links to our class story Little Red which we have just begun reading.
Pathfinders: This week we have enjoyed creating our sequel to our class text ‘I want my hat back’ and we are looking forward to writing our own versions next week.  In maths Year 1’s have been securing their number facts to 20 and the Year 2’s have been busy doing Carol diagram and interpret different types of tables.  We all enjoyed creating our own tally charts today.  In science we have designed our own electrical safety posters and we have learnt about Mother Teresa for our zero to hero topic.  The children continue to enjoy coding in ICT with Mr Doyle and cheering their way through music.
Adventurers: This week in adventurers we have continued looking at the Selfish Giant.  We have been exploring different emotions and the effects of language on them. In maths, we have been looking at 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication, word problems and beginning to explore more division techniques. We are moving on to our final bit of topic for this term where we will be investigating music and Judaism.  Do not forget it is beach school next week on Wednesday and we are all exciting to go down and explore rangoli patterns.
Navigators: Navigators are continuing to enjoy ‘The Invention’s of Hugo Cabret’, we have almost finished the book and are looking for clues, to try to piece together the mystery. One of the themes of the book are early films and the children have loved watching Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Lion’s Cage’,’ Journey to the Moon’ and Harold Lloyd’s ‘Safety First’. We have welcomed the return of beach school, where in anticipation of next half term’s topic, the children have built their own pyramids.

Explorers: This week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. We have had fun learning about all the different traditions that are linked to this festival. We have made paper lanterns and learned about what animal we are in the Chinese calendar. We also wrote the name of our animal in Chinese writing. This also linked to our class book The Magic Paintbrush which is set in China. In our phonics we have finished  speed sounds Set 1 which includes all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds sh, th, ng, qu and ch.  In maths we have been working hard on our addition adding different amounts up to 8. We have also had a fun week of playing together, with a particular focus on imaginative play.
Pathfinders:An exciting week in Pathfinders with the highly anticipated return of Beach school! The children had a wonderful time recreating their own artwork inspired by the Jurassic Coast with a mixture of fossils and dinosaur remains scattered across the beach. We were very fortunate with the weather as it was a beautiful afternoon. The excitement hasn’t stopped there though as they had a fantastic time investigating and creating their own simple circuits in Science as well this week. Our investigating continued in maths with the children exploring how we measure weight, height and capacity. We’ve enjoyed lots of drama activities as part of our English this week with lots of questions being asked of the characters from our new text; I want my hat back by Jon Klassen.
Adventurers: This week we have been writing our own version of the Pied Piper of Hamlin with the children exploring a wide range of ideas.  We have also made a start on our exciting new text ‘The Selfish Giant’ by Oscar Wilde. The children have also worked on repeating geometric patterns in art which have been very exciting and colourful.  We have thoroughly enjoyed doing combined year 3 and 4 maths this week and have made a great deal of progress with our reasoning and application skills.
Navigators: In Navigators we are still loving our new book, ‘ The Inventions of Hugo Cabret’ ,as the story is full of twists and turns. The children have been using the informal language of the rather dubious, Uncle Claude and writing, using a formal tone, to persuade, both of which they did brilliantly. In music they have investigated and sung some of the songs of the slaves, in Science they are learning about how characteristics are inherited and how variation can be used to breed selectively. Also the ways plants reproduce. We have had lots of references to ‘The Green Planet’ which added to our understanding and to the wonderful diversity of plants.

Explorers: We have seen some excellent teamwork in Explorers this week! It has been lovely to see the children play altogether as a large group; which is no easy task! We have had all sorts of wonderful challenges including a floor made out of lava to avoid and some great building skills to mend holes and build a fire engine. Well done team! We have been sequencing and retelling our story ‘The magic paintbrush’ and writing some fantastic ‘ng’ words, like ‘wing, song and thing’ in phonics. In Maths we have been looking at the numbers 6, 7 and 8 and have enjoyed playing lots of matching games like dominoes and snap.
Pathfinders: We had a great time exploring how tricky it is to draw and paint using our toes this week, after learning about the life and artwork of Christy Brown. We also learnt about the life of Walt Disney and as you can imagine, we had lots of enthusiastic discussion around his work! In English the children have worked hard on writing their ‘Bear under the Stairs’ stories as well as focusing on a key skill of asking and recording questions. We have been busy investigating weight, height and length in maths this week.
Adventurers: It has been an interesting week in Adventurers this week due to a high number of absent children from the class; wishing you all a speedy recovery.  For those children in school we have been exploring character and setting descriptions based on Cressida Cowell’s ‘How Train Your Dragon’.  This week has given us the opportunity to recap decimals, times tables and explore some reasoning based questions.  Lastly, in topic, we have finished our unit on Hinduism and looking forward to starting Islam next week.
Navigators: This week in Navigators we have started an exciting new book in English: ‘The Inventions of Hugo Cabret’. It is a wonderful book with a mixture of amazing images and text. The classes have had a great deal of fun trying to predict the story line. In art we have been admiring the sculptures of Pietro D’Angelo so If you are suddenly finding paper clips are going missing, it may be because we too have been creating jewelry and sculptures from them. They have also had great fun researching and singing traditional folk songs with Mrs. Snellgrove.  Year five swimmers are making excellent progress and their confidence and swimming techniques are improving in leaps and bounds.

Explorers: Happy New Year! We have had a great start this term.  In phonics we only have 2 sounds to go to complete set 1 which is super progress.  We have done lots of blending practice and recognising the beginning, middle and end sounds in words.  Maths has been all about number bonds, using adding and subtracting.  The bus and bus stops were a favourite game!  Our topic this half term is Under the Sea and we are learning new, interesting facts every day.  Our focus book at the moment is The Magic Paintbrush by Julia Donaldson. Shen is given a paintbrush which makes the things she paints come to life, this has sparked lots of discussions about what is useful and what people really need.
Pathfinders: It has been a busy and exciting start to the Spring term in Pathfinders. We have begun our new topic; ‘Zero to Hero’ and have enjoyed learning about the lives of heroes and heroines, both past and present, including Thomas Edison and Malala Yousafzai. I have been really impressed and proud of the children’s responses and questions so far. In English we have been inspired by our key text; ‘The bear under the stairs’ by Helen Cooper and have planned, researched and conducted our own investigations as to whether there is indeed a bear under the stairs! In maths we have been revising our key number facts, counting in twos, fives and tens and problem solving with money. Keep up the great work Pathfinders!
Adventurers: Spring term in Adventurers has got off to a flying start this year! We have flown into action looking at our new topic “A World of Difference”, which focuses on different world religions, understanding and tolerance. So far we have explored concepts around Buddhism and Catholicism, and will be looking at Hinduism going forward. The children have been really excited to learn about the influence of religion on history and how it shapes out world today. In English, our traditional tale ‘the Pied Piper of Hamelin’ by Michael Morpurgo, has been very well enjoyed by the whole class. They really enjoy how the story plays out and playing their roles on the town council, making decisions about the rat infestation. Finally, in Maths, the class have been exploring their times tables and properties of shapes. They are making great progress and seem to be enjoying the new challenging content. I have really enjoyed this blisteringly fast start to the year and look forward to where our learning takes us next. Excellent work Adventurers, keep it up!

We continue to be impacted by the global pandemic, with only 5 days since September with all staff in school and many absences from children, but I have been so proud of how everyone has pulled together, continued to work hard and really be the very best versions of themselves. There is a lot of speculation in the press about what will happen over the next few days and weeks and schools know no more than parents. We are fully expecting to be welcoming the children back to school on Wednesday 5th January after our INSET day on the Tuesday. We will contact families if we are instructed to do anything different.

On the last day of term, we have said goodbye to Mr Glover and to Mrs Vercoe. We wish them both all the best as they move on to new and exciting opportunities. Mr Foster and Mrs Beare are looking forward to joining the staffing team in January.

I hope you all have a lovely break, a merry Christmas and a very happy new year.

Mrs Cornish

A message from the Governors

The Governors would like to express thanks to staff and parents in making sure that the children have received as normal an education as possible even with the Covid restrictions in place. We appreciate it has caused some challenges, but the school continues to monitor and respond appropriately to the on-going situation following LA guidance.

This term has seen new Governors settle into their respective roles with the addition of a new Clerk to the Governors recently appointed. Full Governing Board meetings have taken place at regular intervals using both the Teams platform and face to face where possible. Minutes of these meetings are available on the website when they have been approved.

This term has been an opportunity for Governors with specific curriculum areas of responsibility to meet with respective teachers and look at action plans and discuss the year ahead with links to the School Development Plans. Governors of non-curriculum related areas have also met with staff holding responsibilities such as finance, health and safety and SEND. These meetings take place across the year with reports presented at full governing body meetings.

There is currently a vacancy for a parent Governor, this role will be advertised in January and we look forward to receiving applications. There is also a co-opted vacancy and would be interested to hear from any members of the local community thinking of school governance.

We hope you have enjoyed seeing your children taking part in festive activities and wish you all a restful break.

Summary Reports and Attendance Certificated

The decision was made to send these home in January, when we hope all children will be in school to receive them.

Week Beginning 6th December 2021
Explorers: Such a busy week practicing other songs for our play next week, finishing our candle holders, learning the sound th and lots of practicing blending and recognising some of our ‘red’ words (words that cannot be sounded out like to, the and I) In maths we have been using Christmas pictures to inspire practicing our number formation and numbers to 10. Making paper chains to decorate our classroom was fiddly but we learnt how to carefully join all the circles together.  Thank you for all your fantastic photos and videos of your Christmas decorations and cheeky elf antics, they are great!  Our disco on Wednesday was awesome and one child called the “best disco ever!!”
Pathfinders: We have had a busy week of rehearsals ahead of our nativity performance ‘Little Angel gets her wings’ next Wednesday. The children have been learning and singing their songs beautifully and we are getting there with our lines and actions. Keep it up Pathfinders! We are very excited about it!In English we have been writing our reports about Wolves to showcase everything we have learnt – the children have become real experts on the topic. In Maths we have been exploring the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction, and investigating our odd and even numbers.
Adventurers: We have had a hectic week in Adventurers Class this week. In our Topic, Rocky the Findosaur, we have been learning about solids, liquids and gases and boiling and freezing points. We have learnt about the processes of evaporation and condensation as it occurs in the Water Cycle. We have written our own Myths and Legends in English, using expanded noun phrases, co-ordination and subordinating conjunctions. There as been some time spent on learning and recording our contributions to the carol service, the children are sounding amazing. Well done Adventurers Class.
Navigators: We have had a wonderful week in Navigators. In English we are writing a letter from Neptune to the Human Race to persuade them to start caring and protecting his seas. We have collected lots of interesting data to use, to encourage Humans to, ‘Get their act together’. The Year fives had a wonderful ’fun-session for their last swimming lesson, this term. Thankyou to Mrs. Vercoe and Mrs. Rutterford for accompanying us each week and sharing their expertise. Year 6 have had their fitness levels assessed. I’m sure they have been exercising hard as many are commenting on aching muscles. We have recorded our songs for the Carol service; played games in our class parties and danced ( using a variety of styles) at the class disco. Thankyou to the PTFA for organizing this and to Pete Wild and Reuben for running the disco. The children all went home smiling.

Week Beginning 29th November 2021
Explorers: This week in phonics our focus has been on writing. How we can take the individual sounds and form words.  In maths we have focused on the numbers 6,7,8 and 9. Doing lots of games and activities to consolidate our knowledge.  Christmas has also arrived, we now have 2 beautifully decorated trees in our classroom and have started rehearsals for the ks1/eyfs Christmas Production. We have been creating some lovely Christmas decorations which are nearly ready to start coming home.
Pathfinders: We have had a really productive week this week with the children showing what they have learnt this term. They have all embraced the opportunity to show what they know and we are incredibly proud of them for their efforts. Well done Pathfinders! We have been very excited to learn our Christmas songs together and the children performed some fantastic percussion in their music lesson too. The Christmas spirit has really begun, particularly with the panto this week too. The children absolutely loved it!
Adventurers: What a fantastic week we have had in class this week. The Christmas elves have been in and decorated our classroom on Tuesday night. We have made our driftwood Christmas Tree and attached our own decoration of what Christmas means to us.  In our Topic; Rocky the Findosaur, we have been learning about how fossils are made and completed a biography on Mary Anning. Next week, we will be finding out about soil and matters of state (solids, liquids and gases). We have been learning about leadership in PE and cracking codes. Throughout our English lessons this week we have learnt about A WHITE BUS and FANBOYS as mnemonics to help us remember out subordinating and co-ordinating conjunctions. We have also recorded part of our contribution to the carol service and our Ukulele concert.
Navigators: What a testing week we have had! The children have carried out their assessments with such mature approach and have worked hard to show their real potential. We do appreciate their efforts and understand how tiring it can be. In their Literacy they have been writing letters to the Education Secretary to persuade him to make school uniform mandatory. I’m not sure they agreed with this, but they put their feelings aside, and argued the case well. In Science we have been carrying out investigations into burning (safely) and into the formation of rust. We found plenty of examples around the school which I’m sure will keep Mr. Sparks busy for a long time to come. We’ve ended the week with a little Christmas sing-song.

Staffing Updates

At the end of this term, Mr Glover and Mrs Vercoe will be leaving Charmouth Primary School. In our celebration assembly, we particularly celebrated the following members of the school community:

Lucy, Rosie, Molly W, Alfred, Etty, Poppy, Willow, Remy, Thea, Joshua, Fox, George D and Adventurers Class

Times Tables Rockstars/Numbot: Jasper, Jadie, Tom, Eowen, Leia, Harry and Jasmine

Reading Eggs Awards: Harry

Doodle Champions: Bobby, Lucy, Jasmine, Charlotte, Remy, Tesni, Jasmine, George, Isla, George, Harry, Fynn and Bailey

Week Beginning 22nd November 2021
Explorers: In phonics we have been carrying on practicing blending the sounds we have learnt into words whilst adding v, y and W. Maths has been full of discussion around capacity using the terminology full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty. Also weighing and balancing, comparing things and deciding whether they are heavier or lighter.  We have also designed and built models using the junk modelling we brought in.
Pathfinders: Following our investigation into the three little pigs last week we have thoroughly enjoyed reading the book ‘Wolves’ by Emily Gravett this week. We have researched facts about Wolves and learnt about the different features of a fiction and non-fiction book. In Maths we have been focusing on using our number facts to help us solve bigger number problems, such as near doubles and ‘think 10’. In Topic we have started our new unit ‘Happy Families’ by looking at our own lives in the past, present and hopes for the future. The children have loved learning about the different instrument families for music and have enjoyed creating their own family pictures.
Adventurers: We have had a fantastic week in Adventurers this week. We have become Rock Detectives and found out about the amazing stories that ricks can tell us. Along with this we have designed and undertaken scientific testing on rock samples to check for permeability and erosion. In English we have started to learn about the Myths of Romulus ad Remus, Pandoras Box and Theseus and the Minotaur. We have had fun creating story maps acting out the myths.  Maths has seen us look at subtraction of three digit numbers which the children have grasped superbly well.  We have begun to read some of Mary Anning’s diaries as part of guided reading to help us understand the pioneering work she undertook in Palaeontology as part of the Rocky the Findosaur topic.
Navigators: We have begun a new topic- In Your Element and this week we began by being scientists and carrying out a series of experiments to better understand evaporation. Next week, once we’ve gathered results, we’ll be determining if temperature or surface area affect rates of evaporation. We’ve also been learning about the effects of fire and how to stay safe around the home and this will carry forward into next week too. In English we have been preparing points to write persuasively and have been planning reasons why having school uniform should be mandatory. It’s been great practice to work on forming and understanding views differing to ours- an important life skill! Finally, we have been working hard in PE and the Year Sixes worked this week on developing their strengths where we saw some amazing planking and push ups!

Week Beginning 15th November 2021
Explorers: We have really enjoyed role playing in our home corner this week. Taking turns to go shopping and to be on the till working. Lots of money exchanging hands and change being given.  This has inspired some of our maths using the language of more and less and starting to look at value. Our fantastic driftwood decorations are taking shape, and once the clay has fully dried we will be decorating our candle holders. In phonics we learned the sounds sh, j and r and using our Fred fingers carried on blending the sounds into words. On Wednesday we were lucky enough to be able to watch the recycling lorry tip all our recycling in. The glass was very noisy!!
Pathfinders: A busy week of making for enterprise week in Pathfinders with moving pictures, Christmas cards and some new structures for The Three Little Pigs! We’ve really enjoyed our design and technology tasks, even though some were a little more challenging than others. We are eager to take what we have learnt forward for our future Christmas crafts. In English we took inspiration from our design and technology tasks and reviewed the story of The Three Little Pigs; this time considering the story from the viewpoint of both the pigs and the wolf. We had a lively debate in class as to who was really to blame and created some wanted posters for the guilty characters. In Maths we have all been comparing our numbers this week; helping us to find more, less and the difference between them.
Adventurers: We have had a fantastic week writing letters to Santa to persuade him to keep us off the naughty list. We have also had great fun during enterprise week, making our very own Christmas cards with moving mechanisms in. A massive thank you to those parents that came to help us go and collect driftwood for our class Christmas Tree.
Navigators: This week we have had a focus on kindness and enterprise. There are been so many occasions where we have seen kindness in action: helping each other in class and thanking each other for little kindnesses. We have really enjoyed designing and starting to make our decorations and practice a variety of stitches. We all look forward to seeing the finished products. Navigators have written their instructions to tell others how to make them, although I think many may want to amend them in the light of actually making it. We are all looking forward to Children in need day.

Home Learning

We expect children to do home learning at home; we have kept the home learning to a minimum (around 1 hour across the whole week). Our Home Learning expectations can be read using here Home learning expectations September 2021.

We have kept the homework online as research has shown this positively impacts learning; it also ensures that extra paper is not lost and wasted.

Children will be asked to complete homework in school if it’s not completed at home, but they will not miss a whole break. Children need to get into the habit of doing homework as part of their preparation for secondary school.

If you have difficulty logging on or completing the homework, please contact your child’s class teacher via the school office.

Children In Need:

On Saturday there will be a cake sale outside of Morgans from 9.30am.  This has organised by an ex-pupil of Charmouth Primary School and she will be raising money for Children in Need.

Week Beginning 8th November 2021
Explorers: What a great maths week it’s been. Our focus has been counting backwards from 10 and using lots of our class resources to make 10 and start to look at number bonds. We read a book called 10 wriggly wiggly caterpillars and inspired by this we went on a leaf hunt round the field and playground and then chose and stuck 10 of them onto a big piece of paper. There were so many leaves we had enough for 10 each! Using hole punches we made munchie holes in some leaves and threaded pipe cleaner caterpillars through yum yum. In phonics we learnt the sounds l, e and h, there has been a lot of lift off the top and scoop out the egg chat 🤣. Mr Mitchell,as always, has enjoyed listening to everyone read this week, well done to all the families who are doing reading at home throughout the week, they are progressing really well and the blending is getting really good. Next week is enterprise week and if you have any junk modelling materials at home please send them in for us to make some awesome creations using different construction techniques.
Pathfinders:We’ve had a great time this week finishing off our ‘Unity in the Community’ topic by writing our own Information leaflets about Charmouth. The children have done fantastically well at advertising Charmouth at its best; whilst also ensuring safety first with lots of safety warnings for cliff falls and tide times. We have been very busy readers this week also with lots of 1;1 reading, guided reading and nonsense/alien word activities. Don’t let those aliens trick you – remember to Fred talk and sound out those words. We’ve enjoyed celebrating maths week with lots of fun games on the ipads and showing what we know with games and activities based on our number bonds to 10 and 100! The children have also enjoyed making their 3D buildings from Charmouth for D/T and have been eagerly observing their cress seeds for our growing experiment in Science.
Adventurers: We have had a busy week in Adventurers class. As part of Maths week we have been doing daily times table practice and enjoying some fun Maths, Our thanks to Mrs Dare for organising the week.  In English we have been imitating the language in our model text, trying to convince Santa that Ronnie Nutbog or Truly and Utterly Snottersworth do not need to be on the naughty list! We have come to the end of our topic, looking at Law and Order from a global perspective, finding out about Amnesty International and its founder.  As part of our Armistace Day commemoration in class we have learnt about No Man’s Land and made some fantastic poppies which the children have brought home. We have also had fun in PE, playing noughts and crosses.
Navigators: We have had a more calm week this week looking at Roman villas. We have used a graphic design programme to create our own designs of buildings and objects with some children producing some fantastic gardens and houses! Our Year Five swimming sessions are going well and Mrs Hopson can see good progress. Of course there has been much fun this week in Maths where we have been striving to beat other schools in TTRS and have had some fun problem solving and finding our way out of the woods! Finally, a big congratulations is in order for Alexis, who has thrashed our goals on TTRS to come first in school as the most played TTRS pupil. Well done Alexis!

Week Beginning 1st November 2021
Explorers: A fantastic, busy first week back. We have learnt three new sounds u, b and f in phonics and practicing blending using our Fred fingers. In maths our focus has been the number 5 and number bonds to 5.  We also had the fire engine visit us twice!!! On Tuesday they were called to a huge fire minutes after arriving, it was very impressive how quickly they got ready and left. On Friday they came back and we all took turns sitting in the cab and using the hoses.  We asked them how many cats they had rescued, the answer was none! They did rescue a cow which had fallen off a cliff though!
Pathfinders: The children have settled back into school really well this week; we have been really impressed with their developing listening skills, their focus and enthusiasm for learning. What a great start Pathfinders! We have spent some time this week talking about our emotions and how these can effect how ready we are for learning, and what we can do to go from feeling, for example, unsettled (yellow) to ready to learn (green). Each table now has a colour fan to help us identify this and share with each other (red = angry, blue = sad). We have focused on our key skills in English with lots of small focused tasks to develop our reading and to help us apply our phonics to our writing. In Maths in year one we have been representing number sentences using different models, and learning to use addition the addition, subtraction and equals symbols. In year two we have been reordering and rebalancing number sentences, using the number facts we know, to help us solve calculations quicker. Our topic this week has focused on History where we have studied photos of Charmouth in the past and learnt all about why we celebrate Bonfire night.
Adventurers:
Navigators:Navigators have been having great fun this week, as we continue through our ‘You’re not Invited’ topic to do Music. They have spent the week looking at battle chants including learning the haka! Much fun was had trying to be intimidating without laughing and we had some great musical compositions. Also, the Year Fives began their swimming sessions this week and had a really positive first session gaining water confidence and improving their swimming strokes. We have sent home reading records that now include reward charts, the spelling patterns we are working on, our current learning as well as opportunity to log reading and completed homework. Please take time to complete these and encourage your child to bring them to school each day. They will no longer be taking home their orange cards, as the spellings will be written weekly into their logs. Reading records will be monitored once a week by staff. Homework has also been set and will be set weekly on TTRS, Doodlemaths and Reading Eggspress. As always, if you ever have any queries, you can contact the class teachers on navigatorscoleman@charmouth.dorset.sch.uk and navigatorsthompson@charmouth.dorset.sch.uk . Have a lovely weekend. Mrs Dare.

A judge will walk around the village on Saturday 13th November, and select the most striking and post a rosette and small prize through the door of the winner and runner up in each year group.

If you wish to enter please tell the school office your name, age group and address.

Why not decorate your door or window during half term to brighten up the village. It’s a good excuse to get the Christmas lights up early.😁

Regards, Judith Howells
